Fig. S1. Courtship and spawning behavior in Brienomyrus brachyistius.One or more behaviors precede spawning (A,B,D). Upon initiating a behavioral interaction with the female, the larger male closely follows her (A). When the female stops swimming forward, both sexes could engage in to head-to-tail circling behavior (B), the male line up parallel to the female while curving the posterior half of his body to engage in vent-to-vent coupling and both quiver their bodies (C) or they could hover (D). After spawning (C), the pair could end the courtship behaviors or may re-engage in to behaviors A,B, or D for another spawning bout. Shaded individual is the male and the other individual is the female.
