Oxygen uptake rates used to calculate the above ratios have been corrected for heterotrophic contribution (determined from Riftia respiration rates prior to autotrophy). pH was maintained at 6.1 and all other substrates were held at `typical' concentrations (see Materials and methods). All rates were calculated using wet mass.
