Fig.·S1. Varying ability of different bacterial species to
support Caenorhabditis elegans growth. N=6–8 for wild type, 9–10 for eat-2, 5 for eat-5; each data point is a different experiment done on two plates with
50–100 worms per plate. In cases of large variability between individual worms
(eat-5 on DA837, eat-2 on Bacillus megaterium, and eat-5 on B. megaterium), the
growth rates of single worms were measured, one per plate (41, 45, 43 animals,
respectively). Here and throughout the paper, a sporulation-deficient variety
of B. megaterium was used (see
Materials and methods). Values are means ± s.e.m. *Significantly different from
the wild type on the same bacteria (P<0.01; Student’s t-test).
