The traffic is observed on a 10 mm wide bridge placed between a nest (on the left) and a food source (on the right). Ants are moving in both directions in what appears to be a haphazard sequence.
The traffic is observed on a 3 mm-wide bridge placed between a nest (on the left) and a food source (on the right). One can clearly see that ants cross the bridge as clusters of individuals moving in the same direction (first towards the nest, then towards the food source). This organization allows to reduce the number of head-on encounters that incur a delay in the progression of the ants. One can also see other ants forced to ‘wait’ at the level of the bottlenecks while a cluster is crossing the bridge.
