Movie 1
Ciliary reversal in response to UV application to the entire cilium above the basal body.
Light was applied to cilia at the anterior of a P. caudatum cell loaded with NP-EGTA in Ca2+-chelating medium. The area of UV application is indicated by the bright circle. Ciliary reversal took place strongly only in the UV application area.

Movie 2
Ciliary reversal in response to UV application to the entire cilium above the basal body.
Light was applied to cilia at the anterior of a cell loaded with NP-EGTA in Ca2+-containing medium. The area of UV application is indicated by the bright circle. Ciliary reversal took place strongly only in the UV application area. This result is similar to Movie 1.

Movie 3
Ciliary reversal in response to UV application to the tip of cilium.
Light was applied to cilia at the anterior of a cell loaded with NP-EGTA in Ca2+-containing medium. The area of UV application is indicated by the bright circle. UV application induced weak ciliary reversal in the area.

Movie 4
Ciliary reversal in response to UV application to the portion of the cilium including both the basal body and the upper ciliary region.
Light was applied to cilia at the anterior of a cell loaded with NP-EGTA in Ca2+-containing medium. The area of UV application is indicated by the bright circle. UV light was somewhat scattered by cytoplasmic particles. Ciliary reversal in the UV application area took place before trichocyst exocytosis. On the other hand, ciliary reversal outside the application area took place after the trichocyst exocytosis. The video rate is slowed to 1/3 of the original speed.

Movie 5
Ciliary reversal in response to UV application to the inner portion of the cell.
Light was applied to the anterior of a cell loaded with NP-EGTA in Ca2+-containing medium. The area of UV application is indicated by the bright circle. UV light was somewhat scattered by cytoplasmic particles. Even in the area where trichocyst exocytosis took place, ciliary reversal never occurred prior to trichocyst exocytosis. Ciliary reversal within and outside of the area of trichocyst exocytosis took place simultaneously just after trichocyst exocytosis. The video rate is slowed to 1/3 of the original speed.
