For a given value of respiratory quotient (RQ), the relationship between (PextO2-PintO2, where PextO2 is water PO2 and PintO2 is blood PO2) and PintCO2 is a straight line originating at the abscissa PextO2. Increases in RQ (non-pulmonary) and decreases in RQ (pulmonary) shift PCO2 values of bimodal breathers to various levels between those for strict water- and air-breathers.
