A Sensitive Recording (Transpiration) Balance with a New Form of Electrically Operated Recorder
1 Department of Botany, Bedford College, University of London
A new form of self-recording balance is described, sensible to losses (or gains) of about 0.015 gm. A minor advantage of the design is that a stock chemical balance is used and that the modifications made do not interfere with the use of the balance for general purposes.
A new design of three-pen electrical recorder is also described. This possesses, among other advantages, a very wide range, giving a continuous record for some days without attention of impulses which may be received at intervals as close together as 10 seconds.
The apparatus forming the subject of the present paper can be conveniently employed in any case in which it is desired to obtain an automatic record of small losses or gains in weight. It was devised for the measurement of the loss of weight occurring when a plant loses water by transpiration and the description given relates to its use in this connection.
