The waveforms generated by the flight sounds of the Caribbean fruit fly Anastrepha suspensa (Loew) were recorded and analysed. These analyses included measurements of wingbeat frequency (WBF), sound pressure level (SPL) and harmonic content. The WBF and SPL were similar for both sexes but varied with fly maturity. A power spectral density (PSD) plot was made of the waveforms produced by each fly. These PSD plots showed waveform differences between young 1- to 4-day-old) flies and older flies, but these differences decreased with age. In flies more than 4–6 days old the waveforms remained relatively constant throughout the test period and were similar, for both sexes in that each contained discrete, narrow-band spectral lines in both the fundamental frequency and the harmonics.
