ERRATA : ‘Wall drag on free-moving ciliated microorganisms’

The coefficient of the first c/R₀ term in equation (3) was incorrectly calculated as 1.43. Its value should be changed to K, where K=0.383 for Tetrahymena, 0.445 for P. caudatum and 0.452 for P. multimicronucleatum. In addition the letters c and a should be interchanged in the equation.

Three important consequences of this correction are:

1. The prolate spheroid curve in Figs. 3-5 will shift so that it merges with the sphere curve at 25 (R₀-1 40.

2. Table 2 columns should read:

0.50 3.1

0.75 7.8

0.90 23.2

0.92 25.1

0.98 982.1

3. The first three sentences of the Conclusion section (p. 762) should read:

‘Equation (3) may not be considered adequate for determining the value of S safe from wall drag on the body of a sinking ciliate. The error in its estimate of Slies in the undesirable direction of underrating a minimum reliable tube bore diameter. The difference between the plots for the models and the organisms (see Figs. 3-5 after adjustment), together with the dependence of both (3) and (4) on fore--aft symmetry and axisymmetry, leads to the conclusion that this error is a function of geometry.’

Two corrections not related to the above are:

1. The definitions for S_e and S_w, (p. 766) should be interchanged.

2. The first credit name (p. 766) should be spelled Mr Lang Wah Lee.
