Errata

p. 227. The footnote should read:

...object brightness - background brightness/background brightness.

pp. 231-2. In equations (1), (3) and (4), f should be divided by 4. Equation (2) should read:

C' = 2rssin 2{theta} + r2

s2sin2 2{theta} + 1/f{pi}2

This correction alters the numerical values of the ordinates in Text-fig. 3, but does not alter the general shape of the curve.
