On the Determination of the Percentage of Abortive Pollen in Plants
1 King's College, University of London
Attention is directed to the following points in the determination of the percentage of abortive pollen in flowers.
1. The percentage of abortive grains increases with, and appears to be a function of, the age of the flower.
2. Determinations with pollen shaken out from ripe anthers give far too low a value of the amount of abortion. A representative sample is readily obtained by carefully teasing out the anthers in the mounting fluid.
