At slower speeds, the slope of the line relating VO2 and speed is equal to the net O2 cost of transport (ml O2 m-1). Average VO2 at speeds greater than Umax is equal to maximum metabolic rate (VO2max, ml min-1). N=12. Below 21.8 m min-1, VO2=1.80+0.100U, where U is speed; above 21.8 m min-1, VO2=3.98.
