Escapin preferentially kills E. coli cells in their growing but not in their resting state. 2 x108 cells ml-1 in early-log growth or stationary phase were centrifuged, and the pellet was resuspended in fresh LB medium. The absorbance reading was adjusted to that of early-log phase cells (=0.5). Cells were then coincubated in escapin at 0-50 µg ml-1 at 37°C for 2 h. Cultures were then placed on LB agar plates and incubated at 37°C for 18 h, at which time the number of viable colonies was counted. Values are means ± S.E.M., N=3.
