Incubation media contained 100 mmol l^–1 K-gluconate and 100 mmol l^–1 TMA-gluconate ( ${blacksquare}$ , ${square}$ ) or 200 mmol l^–1 TMA-gluconate (•). All media contained 40 mmol l^–1 Hepes-Tris and 50 µmol l^–1 valinomycin at pH 7.0.
