The inset shows that the anterior thoracic tergite was moved manually in the direction of the double-headed arrow. {theta} is the flexion angle of the second thoracic tergite, which was varied manually by means of a micromanipulator. Flexion-induced activity was recorded en passant from nerve 3 of the second thoracic ganglion. The anterior and posterior connectives to the second thoracic ganglion were cut.
